686,318. Centrifugal separators. LOFTHEIM, T. B. Dec. 6, 1949 [Dec. 10, 1948], No. 31315/49. Class 23. In a dust separator of the centrifugal type comprising a bladed rotor having primary passages communicating with primary outlets for the purified gas at the periphery of the blades, and having at least one secondary outlet for the dustbearing gas, each blade has at least one secondary opening for receiving the dust from a primary passage and delivering it outwardly through a secondary passage to a secondary outlet, the secondary opening or openings being so arranged that it or they deliver the dust-bearing gas to the secondary passage at different distances from the axis of rotation. In Fig. 2 the space between a pair of blades 1 constitutes a primary passage 9 and primary outlet 19, and the secondary passages are constituted by tubes 3 disposed at the peripheral edges of the blades. The tubes are inclined to the axis of rotation and each communicates with a primary passage through a correspondingly inclined secondary opening 2. The tubes are closed at their ends nearer to the axis of rotation and communicate at their other ends with the secondary outlets. Fig. 3 shows a separator of the kind described in Specification 582,480, referred to, comprising scrollshaped blades mounted on a rotor body 11. Each scroll discharges purified gas through an axially-disposed primary outlet 19, and dust-laden gas through a series of secondary openings 12 communicating with a secondary outlet 15 via a secondary passage 14. In Fig. 5 the spaces between the blades 17 constitute the primary passage 9 and primary outlets 19, while secondary openings 18 communicate via a secondary passage 20 with a secondary outlet 24. An additional dust outlet 23, formed between a stationary wall 21 and a rotary wall 22 of lesser diameter, prevents, it is stated, separated dust from returning to the primary outlets.
