Class 59 An apparatus for longitudinally adjusting the plug of a Jordan refiner of the type in which the forward and rear plug shaft bearings are slidable along a track comprises a housing mounted on the engine in extension of the track and including threaded means for advancing the rear bearing and spring means for exerting continual pressure on the said bearing and on the advancing means in the direction of backing off. In the plug adjustment means shown, rotation of a handwheel 51 causes, via interengagement of pusher and pushed plates 45, 46, respectively, longitudinal travel of a rod 52 which is connected to the casing of the slidable rear plug shaft bearing 12 of the refiner. Tolerance and play in the bearing and in the screwed handwheel connections are taken up by a spring S which is arranged to surround the rod 52 in a housing B, the end 57 of the spring abutting the end of the housing whilst the end 58 abuts a member 59 which is threadedly mounted on the rod. The housing B is mounted, by means of projecting flanges 41, 42, containing bolt-holes 43, 44, on an extension 30 which is welded to the main frame F of the refiner. The extension 30 is provided with flanges and these contain bolt-holes 33, 34, such that interengagement of bolt-holes 33, 34 with 43, 44, respectively, and the use of bolts 35 allows the initial affixing of B near the outer end of 30 and its subsequent removal and reinstallation nearer to the frame F as the refiner plug wears and the bearing casing 12 is caused to move to the left.
