690,479. Motor power plant. HAMMICK, F. C. Nov. 15, 1948 [Dec. 19, 1947; April 1, 1948], Nos. 29679/48 and 29680/48. Class 110(iii) [Also in Group XXVII] A power plant includes an internal combustion engine having two operatively-connected reciprocating pistons, one operating on a four-stroke cycle, and the other on a two-stroke cycle, the pistons having a common working chamber and being arranged jointly to sweep a greater volume in the working stroke than in the induction stroke, and an exhaust-driven turbine operatively-connected to the pistons. In Fig. 11, the engine comprises four-stroke pistons 19, 20 connected to the crankshaft 16 and opposed two-stroke pistons 22, 23 driving shafts 24, 25, connected by chain and sprocket gearing to the crankshaft 16 on which is fixed an exhaust-driven turbine 154. The edges 155 of the blades may be turned so that they assist scavenging effect towards the end of the exhaust stroke. In Fig. 16 the fourstroke pistons 244. 246 are connected to a crankshaft 227 and the two-stroke pistons to a half-speed shaft 226, the two shafts being geared together through a shaft 232 on which is mounted a twostage exhaust-driven turbine 234.
