695,279. Dividing by fusion. BRITISH OXYGEN CO., Ltd. April 3, 1951 [April 15, 1950], No. 9312/50. Class 83 (iv). In a machine for preparing pipes for forming a T-piece comprising a base with a pipe supporting means, and a flame cutting nozzle supported by the base and connected thereto by means including a crank, a sliding member and a radius rod in series to provide universal movement of the nozzle relatively to the base, the nozzle is supported on an arm carried by a rotatable shaft journaled in a movable head, the shaft carrying a crank arm and pin, the pin engaging a slotted cross-head fastened to the sliding member reciprocable in the moving head, and the head being reciprocable relatively to the base at rightangles to the path of the sliding member. In one embodiment of a machine for cutting a hole in a pipe 24, Fig. 1, a vertical column 2 is mounted on a base 1 which mounts tube supports 23 and a head 3 is vertically slidable on the column 2, a counterweight 26 being provided. A shaft 4 rotatable by means of a worm engaging a wheel 22 thereon carries an arm 5 on which is adjustably mounted a nozzle assembly 6 and carries a crank-arm 7 with an adjustable pin 8 which engages a slotted cross-head 9 secured to a member 10 slidable in guides 11 in the head 3. One end of a screwed rod 12 engages a nutforming member 16 pivoted to the top of the column 2 and the other end is mounted in a collar 13 pivoted in a bracket 15 on the slide 10. In operation, the crank 7 and nozzle assembly 6 are adjusted to the radius of the hole to be cut and the rod 12 is adjusted so that its length between its pivoted points is equal to the radius of the pipe 24. Rotation of shaft 4 by hand or power moves nozzle assembly 6 in a circle and the crank 7 causes reciprocation of the slide 10. The rod 12 causes the head 3 to reciprocate vertically and thus keeps the nozzle assembly 6 adjacent the pipe surface. In a modification, the head 3, Fig. 4, is horizontally reciprocable on the base 1 and the pin 8 on the crank 7 engages a slotted member 9 secured to a member 10 slidable in guides 11 while the radius rod 12 pivoted to the slide 10 at one end is secured to a spigot 18 in the column 2 at the other. This device is shown applied to profiling the end of a pipe.
