697,815. Lathe attachments. BROWNSON, F. O. March 31, 1952 [April 5, 1951], No. 7870/51. Class 83 (iii). A device for machining large work in lathes by rotating the work in positions where the plane of its rotation is not obstructed by the lathe-bed comprises an easily detachable additional mandrel and driving means therefor which will rotate attached work in a plane parallel to the length of the lathe-bed and at either side thereof. In one form an auxiliary headstock A, Fig. 2, houses driving bevel-gears for a spindle H which carries work G at the rear of the lathe. A coupling C connects the lathe spindle with the drive to the auxiliary device. The normal cross-slide is used for turning the work. In a modification, Fig. 3, a bracket X, secured to the lathe bed, supports an auxiliary headstock and a chain drive C is employed.
