693,562. Overtaking articles. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES. Ltd. Jan. 24, 1951 [Jan. 24, 1950], No. 1830/50. Class 117 Hollow articles having one end closed and the other open, are dropped down tube 8 and are fed therefrom one by one by escapement mechanism 10, 12, the plungers 10, 12 of which are withdrawn in turn by crank 32 the movement of which passes to the plungers through crank arm 34 and rocker 33 against rotary springs 37, 39. The articles thus fed are sorted by annular drum 1 driven stepwise from a driving shaft by a general movement, the rotating pin 23, engaging in slots 19 formed externally in the wheel, and the drum being formed with hole 2. alternate holes each having a pin 3 fixed therein. Thus an article fed with closed end forward passes through the empty holes 2, and then through passage 7' in fixed core 6, and finally passes out through the appropriate hole 2 to outlet tube 15, whilst an article fed with open end forward falls on to a pin 3 and is carried' around, being held in by shield 17 until discharged through the same outlet tube 15, so that all the articles are thus uniformly orientated. Plunger 25 co-operating with slots 21 formed in the drum 1 so as to hold firm the latter between indexing movements, is driven from driving shaft 22' through cam 24 and lever 26, and shaft 31 is driven therefrom through 2-in-1 reduction gears 29, 30. The position of fixed core 6 may be reversed so that the article makes steps of falling into hole 2, into passage 7, into lower hole 2, and intoanother tube 15 successively.
