In means for adapting the speed of take-up of an extruded product on a winding drum or the like to the speed of extrusion, the product leaving the extrusion press passes round one or more pulleys associated with braking members so that an increase of the pull on the material by the drum causes an increase in the braking force exerted by the pulley. In one form, Fig. 1, a lead rod 2 issuing from an extrusion press 1 passes along a groove in a brake shoe 5 and then around a movable pulley 6 before passing to a winding device, not shown. An increase in tension in the portion 7 serves to move the pulley towards the shoe 5. The pulley may be long enough to take several turns of the rod 2. In a modification, Fig. 5, the rod passes around two lower pulleys 11 and an upper pulley 10, each associated with a brake shoe 13. More than three pulleys may be provided.
