[Class 7 (iii)] A device for testing fuel injectors by viewing the spray comprises a tank 18 feeding liquid through a filter 20 to a pump 10 actuated by a cam 7 driven by an electric motor 6, the pump being connected by a flexible pipe 57a to an injector 24 mounted in an adjustable stand 22 so that it sprays into a funnel-shaped member 25 connected by an elbow 37 to a fan 12 driven by the motor 6. The liquid condensing in the funnel 25 flows through a drain to a tank 15, the remainder being carried by the air stream induced by the fan 12 which separates it by centrifugal action and delivers it to the tank 15 at 52. The pump 10 is controlled by a rack-and-pinion 62, and valves 55, 58 can be operated by handles 55a, 58a, to connect the pump delivery to a pressure gauge 19 and accumulator chamber 21. For testing the tightness of the injector nozzle seat, the gauge 19 and chamber 21 are connected to the pump delivery and the pressure is built up to a value just below the nozzle operating value, when the motor 6 is stopped. The rate at which the pressure on the gauge drops is an indication of the tightness of the seat. In a modification the cam 7 is hand-driven by a fly-wheel and the injector is mounted in a cabinet and viewed through a transparent panel, the spray being illuminated by lamps.
