Process for improving the strength properties of ceramic materials

A ceramic material, e.g. 70 per cent. steatite and 30 per cent silicon carbide, is annealed by heating it, after firing, to a temperature of 1150 DEG C. keeping at this temperature for about an hour and then rapidly cooling it to below 800 DEG C. in still or moving air or gas or in a liquid or powder. The material may be covered with glaze which is fired during the annealing process.
