Seeds are treated by coating with a film forming composition comprising an organo mercury perthiocyanate of the general formula (RHg)2C2N2S3 where RHg is an organo mercury radical preferably in which R is a hydrocarbon group or an ether group such as alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkoxyalkyl, aryloxyalkyl and alkoxyaryl. The compounds may be in finely divided condition in admixture with a solid inert carrier such as Cherokee clay, chalk, kieselguhr, talc, pyrophyllite, coal, sodium sulphate and bentonite with or without materials such as lanolin, or may be dispersed in a liquid, e.g. water. Wetting agents such as dodecyl benzene sodium sulphonate and dispersing agents, e.g. of the sulphonated alkyl naphthalene formaldehyde condensation product type or carboxy cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol or a soluble or solubilized protein may also be added.
