Class 39(4) A chain reaction is produced by bombarding one element in the presence of a second element with protons, neutrons or alpha particles the elements being chosen so that particles emitted by the first element react with the second element to produce particles which in turn react with the first element. Li in a mixture of LiF and Al powders is bombarded with protons from a 100,000-volt positiveray tube and the alpha particles from the (p,2a) reaction produce an (o,p) reaction with A1. Both reactions are exothermic. Proportions of 30 per cent A1 and 70 per cent LiF are preferred.
