Classes 64(2) and 123(2) In a heat-transmitting fluidized bed of fine, solid particles through which a main stream of gas is passed 'for the supply or removal of heat, supplementary gas is supplied to the bed at points where the particles are not disturbed by the main gas stream, so that the whole bed is fluidized. A sand bed, fluidized over part of its width by gases from the combustion of fuel oil, and transmitting heat to steam pipes in the bed, is fluidized in the remaining parts by air introduced through pipes disposed in the bed and having perforations in their undersides. The supplementary gas may be preheated by heat-exchange with the flue gases leaving the bed.
