[Also in Group XXXVIII] In apparatus for determining the load-carrying capacity of substrata comprising a tube 1 adapted to be forced into the ground, a pressure body 6 and a forcemeasuring device 2, the latter is arranged between the tube and the pressure body near the lower end of the tube. The device 2 is of any known form and is connected, e.g. by an electric cable 4, to an indicating device on the surface. A locking member 5 secured to the end of the tube locates the device 2 which abuts against a shoulder 3 in the tube and is engaged by a thrust head 8 secured to the pressure body 6. A ball may be arranged between the head 8 and device 2. Contact between the pressure body 6 and a shoulder 7 formed in the locking member 5 prevents overloading of the device 2. A compressible member or substance 11 occupies the space between the pressure body 6 and the member 5.
