Class 83 (4) In a method of piercing billets 7, Fig. 1, by hot punching in a container 1, waste of billet metal is reduced by placing a wafer 10, Fig. 2, of less valuable metal at the base of the billet so that the metal of the expelled punching 9 is mainly that from the wafer 10. The punch 5 guided by a member 6 placed on top of the billet 7 is pushed nearly to the base of the billet by a ram 4 after which a central base portion 2a of the container is lowered on a support 3 to permit the punching 9 to be expelled. The wafer 10 may be attached to the billet as by welding and may be a flat plate or of varying thickness through its cross-section. It may be heated to a temperature lower than that of the billet. The wafer may remain on the end of billets to be extruded according to a known process in which a low priced metal is arranged at the back of a billet in the extrusion press.
