In a system as in Specification 723,218 in which bowing of the axis of an internally water-cooled sizing roll used in continuous plateglass production is detected by movement of a probe engaging the surface of the roll, and automatically corrected by the consequent operation of a micro-switch controlling a supply of cooling air to the convex position of the roll, movements of the probe at frequencies above and below the fre. quency of movement due to bowing are rendered ineffective to operate the micro-switch. In Fig. 2 the probe (not shown) moves a member 7, carrying a flange 12, axially against a spring 10. High-frequency movements of the probe of small substantially constant amplitude, e.g. due to roll surface roughness, are rendered ineffective by a lost-motion device 12, 19, 19, but movements at other frequencies turn a split bearing 17, 21, against friction, on a fixed shaft 18. An arm 25 of member 17 carries a screw 32, Fig. 3, which operates the microswitch 5, the loading of which is adjustable by a screw 30. To eliminate the effect of low-frequency movements of the probe, e.g. due to datum shifts, the microswitch is mounted on an arm 26 of a member 27 forming, with a member 28, a further split bearing, frictionally engaging shaft 18, which is moved when adjustable screws 34 on arms 24, 25 of member 17 engage arm 26. The two split bearings are tightened to the desired extent by screws 23 acting against springs 22.
