A soil fumigant composition comprises (2-bromoethyl) benzene in the form of (a) a solution in a mineral oil having a flash point above 100 DEG F. and boiling almost entirely above 130 DEG F.; (b) an aqueous emulsion; (c) an emulsifiable concentrate containing, if desired, a water-immiscible organic solvent, and (d) a dust with an inert solid such as chalk, talc, pyrophyllite, altapulgite, Fullers earth or bentonite. For (c) the organic liquid may be a petroleum oil, toluene, liquid halohydrocarbons or a synthetic oil such as a methylated naphthalene. Specified emulsifiers are (a) non-ionic e.g. alkylene oxide with phenols or organic acids such as lauric, stearic, oleic or ricinoleic, sorbitan laurate or stearate, sorbitan stearate polyoxyethylene derivatives, alkylated aryl polyether alcohols, and (b) ionic such as mahogany soaps and sodium lauryl sulphate. Plant growth media containing (2-bromoethyl) benzene are included.
