728,127. Inspecting fabrics. LASZLO, A. Sept. 1, 1952 [May 31, 1951], No. 12909/51. Class 42 (2). [Also in Groups XV and XIX] Apparatus for progressing and inspecting lengths of fabric and for recording faults which may occur on the fabric comprises a machine for progressing the fabric whereon the fabric may be inspected during its travel, and a registering device, ineluding a reduction gear driven from the machine, for progressing a tape, whereon the faults may be recorded, at a greatly reduced speed relative to the speed of the fabric. The registering device shown is attached to the table of a fabric inspection machine and comprises a reduction gear 12 driven from the top roller of the machine. Gear 12 has a ratio of 50 : 1 and drives through belts 14, 28 feed rollers 24, 26. Spring-pressed rollers 23, 25 co-operate with rollers 24, 26 respectively and are releasable by movement of a handle 32. The feed rollers draw a paper recording tape 16 from a feed roll 17 and over a plate 22 when the tape is wound on to a take-up roll 19 driven frictionally from roller 25. In traversing plate 22 the tape passes beneath an aperture 15 in the top surface of the casing 11 of the device. The device is provided with a removable side cover for loading and unloading tape rolls. A braking device may be incorporated to prevent over-running of tape 16. The device can be disposed so that tape 16 moves parallel to, and adjacent the edge of, the fabric passing over the inspection table; or the tape may be arranged to move above the fabric area. In use the inspector marks the paper tape through aperture 15 with pen or pencil whenever a fault appears in the fabric, different symbols being used for different faults; or the pencil may be left resting on the paper to make a continuous line, faults being indicated by sideways movements of the pencil. A datum for marking, corresponding to the point of inspection, may be provided over tape 16 by a fixed ruler or small frame. A carbon copy of the fault record may be made. Different coloured pencils may be used for different faults, or provision may be made for typing appropriate letters or signs on the tape to indicate faults. The tape may have scale markings corresponding to the length of fabric progressed. Where it is desired that a length of marked tape corresponding to a considerable length of fabric be visible, aperture 15 may be larger and the gear reduction much greater, or the tape may be led out of the machine to be wound on a spool some distance away.
