Improvements in and relating to patterning mechanisms for knitting machines

The pattern drum for a knitting-machine and particularly a superposed cylinder machine is adapted to be racked in two directions. The drum which is preferably a pin drum is arranged to actuate levers 41 which rock about a fulcrum plate 54 to influence selector cams 51 controlling jacks for patterning, as described in Specification 730,083. A square-toothed rack wheel 17 is provided at the top end of the drum and is racked in opposite directions by two opposed clawkers 18, 19, a bluff plate 20 being provided and controlled by pins in the drum to be in either of two positions so as to render one of the clawkers inoperative. The clawkers are attached to a slide 35 which is spring-urged towards the needle cylinder of the machine to engage a cam 36 which imparts a reciprocatory motion to the slide thereby operating the clawkers. When it is desired to stop racking of the drum a catch 38 is released to engage a corresponding catch 39 on the slide and holds the slide inoperative. In addition, the levers 41 may be rendered inoperative by moving the fulcrum plate 54, thereby moving the levers to an inoperative position, at the same time releasing a catch 42 which engages the catch 39 on the slide to render the clawkers inoperative. Since, however, it is desirable that the drum should come to rest in a position where patterning commences, a corrector plate 45 is attached to the drum which prevents the catch 42 from engaging with the slide until a recess 46 in the corrector plate releases it. This recess corresponds with the commencement of the pattern. The fulcrum plate 54 may be made in two parts both of which are separately operable, thereby enabling the upper part of the drum to be devoted to one pattern and the lower part to another.
