Bis-cyclopentadienyl iron and nickel and the alkyl and aryl substitution derivatives thereof are prepared by reacting an anhydrous halide of the corresponding metal with cyclopentadienyl sodium or an alkyl or aryl substitution derivative thereof. The reaction may be carried out in a solvent for the metal which is inert to the reaction, e.g. an ether such as diethyl and diamyl ether and anisole, and a tertiary amine such as diethylamine and dimethylaniline. The solvent may be diluted with hydrocarbons such as benzene or a petroleum fraction. The preferred halides are the chlorides and bromides, and a ferric or ferrous halide may be used. In the examples biscyclopentadienyl iron and nickel, bis(n-pentylcyclopentadienyl) iron and bis (2,3,4,5-tetraphenylcyclopentadienyl) iron are prepared. Cyclopentadienyl sodium and the alkyl and aryl substitution derivatives thereof are prepared by reacting cyclopentadiene or the required alkyl or aryl substituted cyclopentadiene with sodium acetylide.
