A transportable pneu matic descaling device for operating on the sides of ships comprises a block carrying a plurality o pneumatic hammer! arranged in rows mounted on a transportable chair in such a manner that the hammers are pressed against the surface to be descaled. As shown, a block 2 carrying percus sive hammers is mountec on an operator's chair 3 suspended from a crab ( running on a girder 9 so that it may be movec vertically and sideways Springs 14 mounted be tween the block and the chair prevent vibrations from the block affecting the chair. In a modification, Figs. 3-7 (not shown), the block is mounted for oscillation or rotation by means of an air motor mounted on the underside of the chair. In the case of the oscillating motor a device is incorporated to brake the movement of the block at the end of the travel of the motor. Rollers making contact with the ship's side and mounted on adjustable arms may be used to alter the pressure of the hammers on the surface.
