In the manufacture of nut and washer blanks, having at least six sides, from circular or oval bar stock, the stock 12 is heated and passed stepwise between opposed pressing tools 13 which flatten it to strip form and' loosen any scale on the surface thereof, the flattened stock then passes between opposed forging tools 18, Fig. 2, having V-shaped edges 19 which form notches 20 at spaced intervals in the sides of the stock, the stock is then severed into individual blanks 21 of polygonal form which are each inserted in a die 22, Fig. 3, with the polygonal sides adjacent the peripheral forming surface of the die, and pressed by a punch 23, to the desired shape. The punch 23 carries a tool 25 for piercing the blank; an ejector 26 removes the blank from the die. The notching tools 18 also sever the blanks 21 from the stock when hexagon blanks are being produced but in the case of eight and twelve-sided blanks separate severing tools 27, Fig. 4 (not shown), are provided. When stock of oval cross-section is used the minor axis thereof is aligned with the pressing tools 13.
