717,952. Digital electric calculating-apparatus. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. Nov. 24, 1952 [Dec. 4, 1951], No. 29603/52. Class 106 (1). [Also in Group XL(c)] An electrical impulse generator comprises a plurality of gaseous electronic discharge devices arranged as two different operational groups by having; the cathodes in each group connected together and over an individual impedance and thence over a single common cathode resistor to a source of potential and also to a single output point, chain connections between the devices of the two groups whereby a conducting device in one group initiates conduction in a device of the other group so that discharge devices in the two groups are rendered conducting alternately in a sequential operation, couplings between the two cathode groups so that conduction in a device of one group causes any conductmg device of the other group to be extinguished, and control devices adapted selectively to be operated to interrupt the sequential operations at any point thereby to determine the number of impulses appearing at the output point. In the described embodiment a chain of coldcathode tubes 1 ... 7 have their probe electrodes P each connected to the igniter I, of the next higher tube by a switch S1 ... S7. The cathodes of the odd-numbered tubes are connected together to form one group while the cathodes of the evennumbered tubes are connected to form a second group coupled to the first by a capacitor 66. A positive pulse applied to the grids of a normally biased-off thyratron 70 by closing a start key 98, causes a brief conduction of the latter whereby a positive pulse is passed to the igniter I, of the first tube 1, causing it to conduct. The rise in potential of its probe electrode P is transmitted to the igniter I, of the second tube 2 establishing an ionizing discharge and causing conduction across this tube. The rise in potential at the cathode of tube 2 is transmitted as a positive pulse via the capacitor 66 to the cathodes of the odd-numbered tubes, and serves to extinguish the tube. 1. In this manner the discharging condition travels along the chain of tubes until an opened switch S1 ... S7 is reached, when the desired number of impulses. will have been transmitted via the output tube 85. A number of parallel chains of tubes settable in accordance with the digits of a multidenominational number may be controlled from a single tube 70: The electrode systems of the series of tubes 1 ... 7 may be arranged in a single envelope.
