Improvements relating to travelling grate or chain grate stokers

In a chain grate stoker a'vertical sealing plate 10 is pivotally mounted at the outer edge of each outer link, the pivots of the plates being coaxial with the respective link pivots, successive sealing plates overlapping and each plate forming a seal, either directly or through the intermediary of a member, with a fixed longitudinal part of the stoker. As shown in Fig. 2, each plate 10 is mounted at each end on a rod 20 which is carried within a hollow bearer pin 3 of a grate chain. In a modification, Fig. 4, the outermost grid links 45 on each side of the stoker are formed as hollow boxes in transverse section, the upper edge 47 of each sealing plate being thickened and bearing against a cut away portion of a respective link, the outer surface 36 of the link bearing, in turn, against a fixed longitudinally-extending portion 37 of the stoker. In a further modification, Fig. 5, the upper edge of each sealing plate 10 is extended transversely on either side to form a cross piece 45 the upper face 48 of which forms a continuous surface both with the cross pieces of the sealing plates at either end of it and with the fuel supporting surface of the grid links 9, the outer edge of the cross piece bearing against the fixed part 37 of the stoker. In both Figs. 4 and 5 the outermost chains of the stoker are of the solid bearing pin roller type.
