The support conductors 7 of the cathode filament 2 are formed wholly or partly as strip so as to give a greater area of anodic impact. The conductors may be pinched around the filament ends somewhere along their length and the free ends 8 bent out laterally. The whole conductor may be of strips or an initially circular conductor may be flattened by rolling over part of its length.
