745,354. Rotary regenerators. STEINMULLER, GES., L & C. July 25, 1952 [Aug. 21, 1951; Nov. 23, 1951; Nov. 29,1951; Dec. 8, 1951],No.18923/52. Class 64(1). A. rotary regenerator in which air and flue gases are in contra-flow comprises two or more spaced rotors coaxially mounted in a casing or casings and a heat exchanger disposed in a path of the flue gases either between rotors, as in Fig. 2 or by-passing one or more rotor parts, as in Fig. 8, so that some or all of the flue gases leaving one rotor are cooled before entering a succeeding rotor. The rotors may be mounted on a single shaft, or on separate shafts which may be interconnected or driven by separate motors. In one form comprising two rotors, the other heat exchanger which may be a feed water heater, is located in the space between the rotors. In another form, Fig. 2, comprising three rotors, 1a, 1b and 1c, all the hot gases flowing from one rotor to the next are diverted through heat-exchangers 9, 12 in spaces outside the regenerator, by rotary discs 15, 16 mounted on the shaft in the spaces between the rotors. The air may pass either around discs 15, 16, through passages 8, 11 as shown, or through non-return valves in the discs. In other forms, also with three rotors, part of the hot gases flow through the second rotor and part through the other heat exchanger, which occupies a space either outside or inside the regenerator; in the latter case the second rotor is of smaller diameter than the other two. A steam generator, Fig. 8, is provided with a steam superheater 24, a second superheater 27 and economisers 28, 32 in parallel flues, and a regenerator having three rotors 31, 34, 37. Flue gases flow through the superheater 27, economisers 28, 32, and regenerator rotors in adjustable proportions. The flue gases from the economiser 32 are cooler than those from the rotor 31. A passage may connect the flues 33, 35 to enable the rotor 34 to be by-passed when starting up to prevent corrosion by condensation of the flue gases. In a modification in which the regenerator has only two rotors, the flue 38 is omitted.
