Tyre cords and like yarns are produced on twisting units comprising a plurality of flyertype uptwisting spindles which deliver yarns to a ring and traveller cabling spindle driven in a direction opposite to that of the uptwisting spindles, all the spindles being in line and having means for simultaneous braking. Yarns from uptwister bobbins a pass through flyers d, lappet guides e, fixed guides f and rollers g to lappet guides h, travellers j and cabling spindles i. Drive to the spindles is from two separate shafts carrying belt pulleys for either the uptwister or cabling spindles. The shafts are connected by change gears whereby the speed of the uptwisting spindles and the delivery rollers may be altered. In order to stop all the spindles of a unit simultaneously, a pedal 14 is arranged to operate a cross-member 17 to raise rods 18, 19 acting on cross-member 20 and members 22, 27 to turn pivoted brakes into contact with flanges 26, 28 on the spindle wharves. According to the first Provisional Specification, alterations in the amount of twist imposed may be effected by altering the diameters of the spindle wharves and also stretching cones may be employed instead of delivery rollers.
