Cutting apparatus, particularly for cutting lengths 31a from cylinders 31 of thin paper rolled on hollow cores, comprises an endless chain 13 carrying spaced supports 14 for pairs of cylinders 31, a motor 30 imparting an intermittent drive to the chain through a Geneva mechanism 21, 22 and a pivotally-mounted frame 32 carrying a motor 35 and a rotary cutting or splitting blade 18. The frame 32 is pivoted into and out of cutting position by an adjustable connecting rod 37 secured to one of several holes 40 in the frame and driven by an eccentric 38 in the drive for the chain 13. Spring-loaded or weighted clamps 45 and 45a for the cylinders and the cut lengths respectively are carried by pivoted bars 42 and 42a and stops 44b and 44c for the bars are arranged so that the clamp 45 engages the cylinders prior to the start of cutting but the clamp 45a on the other side of the cutter blade does not engage until just after cutting has begun. Rollers 15 on the supports 14 are supported by rails 16 and, beyond the cutter, the rails are sloped slightly downwards to allow tipping of the lengths being cut and thus prevent collapse of the lengths owing to the V-shape of the cutter blade.
