746,486. Treating coal. SIDDIQUI, S. Feb. 25, 1954 [April 21, 1953], No. 10949/53. Class 55(1). In a process for recovering resins and waxes from coal with simultaneous reduction of the sulphur content, the coal in powdered form is subjected to the action of super-heated steam at a temperature within the sub-carbonisation temperature range of the coal, e.g. between 200‹ and 330‹C. The powdered coal is reduced before treatment to a particle size within the range 20-60 mesh, B.S.S. and is preferably also preheated to about 100‹C. The treatment may be carried out in two stages, a first stage for 4-5 hours at temperatures up to 280‹ C. Œ 5‹ C. and then a further treatment at between 280 and 330‹C. In an example in a treatment lasting 10 hours the sulphur content of a coal was reduced from 4À2 to 3À1 per cent and 100 parts of coal powder yielded 79À1 parts of coal residue and a total of 9À7 parts of resin and waxy products on a moisture-free basis.
