747,381. Applying filter mouthpieces. KORBER, K. Feb. 12, 1954 [Feb. 24, 1953; Feb. 25, 1953; Feb. 26, 1953; Feb. 28, 1953], No. 4182/54. Class 130. In a mouthpiece cigar or, as shown, cigarette, a filter tip 4a, Fig. 9, is attached to a cigarette rod length by two superposed uniting bands 6, 15 applied externally of the length and tip and of different widths but both overlying the end of the length. As shown, there are three filter tips 4a, 13a, 20a respectively of crepe paper, paper cuttings and ceramic material and each attached to the length 1 primarily by a separate uniting band 6, 15, 30 respectively. The bands 6, 15 may be coloured and annular zones 6a, 15a thereof left exposed for identification as of the filter tip materials used or of other features possessed by the cigarette such as a glowretarding mouthpiece. The zone 15a may be omitted, or all the bands be co-terminous at their inner ends. The diameter of the tips 4a, 20a may be respectively slightly less and more than that of the tip 13a. The tips may be cylindrical, oval, or, in the case of a cigar, rectangular and are attached in succession on a series of fluted drums such as 3, 11, Fig. 3. Directly or via a double hopper (not shown) the first drum 3 receives from a cigarette-making machine in each flute a pair of cigarette rod lengths spaced apart by more than the length of a double-length tip 4 supplied between them from a hopper 4d. Side deflectors 5 then cause the lengths and tip in each flute to abut and uniting bands 6 cut at 7 from a web 6b and supplied with adhesive by a device 8 are applied to the resulting assemblies and wrapped therearound after assembly transference to a suitably equipped wrapping drum 9. A knife 10 then divides each assembly centrally and it passes to the second fluted drum 11 via a conveyer 26 on which a central deflector 12a spaces the divided parts ready for further tip insertion. The divided assemblies may pass between the drums 9, 11 via a rotary drum conveyer or directly, the central deflector being in the latter case provided in conjunction with the drum 11. The final wrapping drum delivers divided assemblies each comprising two finished mouthpiece cigarettes. The various drums may hold the transferred elements mechanically or by suction. Instead of using a succession of fluted drums, the same drum having suitably adjustable parts may be used successively for the various tipping operations.
