Method for the manufacture of bottoms or wall linings for converters for refining steel, and blocks for such bottoms or wall linings

The production of bottoms or wall-linings for converters for refining steel according to the basic process, or blocks for such bottoms or wall-linings, comprises impregnating with a coke-forming material, preferably coal tar, said bottoms or linings or blocks therefor which have been produced by baking a mixture of burnt dolomite and/or burnt magnesite and/or burnt lime and a coke-forming material, preferably coal tar. The impregnation may be effected by slowly dipping the block into tar or, preferably, by vacuum-impregnation in which the block is placed in an evacuated container which is then filled with tar and opened so as to permit the atmospheric pressure to force the tar into the pores of the block. The impregnated bottom or lining may be baked again before usage or used without such baking; in the latter case a baking will occur during its usage in the converter.
