Perforated trays and methods for effecting the countercurrent contacting of liquid (or liquids) or fluidized solid (or solids) with gas or vapours, or with a lighter andimmiscible liquid
758,048. Gas-liquid and like contact apparatus. STONE & WEBSTER ENGINEERING CORPORATION. March 30, 1954 [Sept. 4, 1953], No. 9233/54. Class 55(2). The superposed trays 12, of perforated plate type, of a rectifying column embody alternate raised and depressed areas 48, 50, preferably produced by straight parallel waves of sinusoidal form. The perforations may be square, tri. angular, round, &c. and located preferably at the corners of equilateral triangles. As shown, the axes of the waves of successive trays are at right angles, or they may be parallel in which case the high areas of one tray preferably lie in the same vertical plane as the low areas of adjacent trays. Liquid discharges from the lowest points only of the tray to which it gravitates after passing through holes at various levels, and flows to the next lower tray in thin sheets 38. With a smooth change from high to low depths on the tray some of the perforations will alternately admit vapour and discharge liquid and a frothing zone will extend over the whole tray. In other forms the trays embody V-shaped waves or waves with high curved and low flat portions or vice versa. Or the waves may be concentric or as separate shallow cups. A further embodiment comprises separate quadrantal sections, the straight parallel waves of each section running at right angles to those of adjacent sections.
