A system for catching fish or animals comprises passing impulses between two electrodes in a conductive medium. A condenser 4 is charged from a D.C. source 3 over a slip-ring 21, reversing commutator 15, 16, ignitron 6, conductive medium between the electrodes 1, 2, reversing commutator 15, 16 and slip-ring 27. At a given instant the positions of the slip rings 21, 27 and reversing commutator 15, 16 aro such that the ignitron 5 is ignited and the condenser discharges through the conductive medium between the electrodes 1, 2 over the ignitron 5, slip-ring 21, reversing commutator 15, 16, power source 3 and slip-ring 27, current continuing to flow over this circuit until the condenser 4 is charged with the opposite polarity. Ignitron 5 is now extinguished, and, ignitron 6 being ignited, the condenser once again discharges, thus the cycle is repeated. A series of voltage doubled alternating impulses is thus passed through the water between electrodes 1, 2; alternatively the circuit may be arranged so that the impulses are unidirectional. The ignitrons are fired by means of auxiliary sliprings 20, 25 and thyratrons 7, 8. A further slip-ring 38 is provided to short-circuit the electrodes 1, 2 to reduce the decay time of the condenser discharge current. The rotary commutators and slip-rings may be replaced by vibratory members. If desired, the ignitrons may be dispensed with.
