The invention comprises 4,8,8-trimethyl-9-methylene - (1,3,3) - bicyclo - 4 - nonanols and ethers thereof having the structure: FORM:0804051/IV (b)/1 wherein R is a member of the group consisting of hydrogen and alkyl radicals having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and a method for the preparation thereof characterized by the treatment of dihydro-a -ionone in a medium formed at least partly of an alkanol in which the alkyl group is the desired alkyl group with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid or boron trifluoride at a temperature at most equal to ordinary temperature. The use of a mineral acid in aliphatic monohydric alcohol generally in the treatment of dihydro-a -ionone is also referred to. In examples the methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl and primary isobutyl ethers of 4,8,8-trimethyl-9-methylene-(1,3,3)-bicyclononanol-4-one are prepared by adding dihydro-a -ionone to solutions of dry hydrogen chloride in appropriate alcohols (1); 4,8,8 - trimethyl - 9 - methylene - (1,3,3)-bicyclononanol - 4 is obtained by adding dihydro-ionone to a secondary butanol solution of dry hydrogen chloride, treating the reaction product with trimethyl borate and distilling to obtain a residue of the borate ester of the desired alcohol and hydrolysing to obtain the free alcohol which separates into liquid and crystalline fractions from which allophanates are prepared (2); concentrated sulphuric acid is employed instead of hydrogen chloride in a similar process (4); the ethyl ether derivative of the alcohol is produced by treating dihydro-a -ionone with cold ethanolic solutions of sulphuric acid (3) and boron trifluoride (5).
