In a road junction traffic signalling system for a tram track 1, 2, running along a roadway, a contact receive 3, 4 is let into the roadway between or near the rails 1, 2 so as to be influenced by a magnet 7, an electromagnet, as shown, or a permanent magnet, carried on a vehicle and arranged to furnish a horizontally directed flux at the road surface with means controlled by the driver of the vehicle for reversing the direction of the flux transversely of the track, e.g. by reversing the direction of energizing current of an electromagnet or by mechanical rotation of a permanent magnet, so that when the vehicle passes over the contact receiver 3, 4, the armature 4 is moved to one side or the other to close one or other pair of switch contacts 4, 6 or 4, 5, and operate the signals accordingly. The armature 4 has a stable neutral position between the contacts 5, 6 when uninfluenced by the vehicle carried magnet. In the case of the electromagnet, the reversing switch may be coupled to a direction indicator on the vehicle or to a switch for operating the switch points at the junction.
