In a classifier comprising a centrifugal separating chamber having a lower conical part 3 discharging coarse particles into a hopper 4 and an outlet 5 discharging fine particles and gaseous carrier medium, additional gas is introduced at or adjacent the lower end of the conical part and flows upwardly through an annulus formed between the conical part and a member 9 centrally disposed within the lower part of the conical part. The additional gas, supplied by a pipe 17 to a chamber 16, passes to a further chamber 12 and thence around the lower edge of the conical part into the separating chamber. The member 9 is mounted on a rod 11, is axially adjustable, and may -be continuously rotated. Gas carrying the particles is drawn into the separating chamber through a volute 2 by a fan connected to a chamber 6 into which the outlet 5 discharges. A number of helical vanes 25 are placed within the separating chamber. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) additional gas from an annular chamber enters the separating chamber through a slot spaced from the lower edge of the conical part.
