A multi-spindle drilling &c. machine comprises a drill head 15 moved transversely relatively to a control-piece 8 which determines which spindles shall be operative during each feed - movement of the head. The piece 8 carries stops 10 arranged in the pattern of holes to be produced on the work 12, so that as the head-slide 15 carrying a single row of drills 14 is moved transversely, different one of the drills are brought beneath successive rows of stops. The slide 2 carrying the piece 8 is fed by a cam 6. Instead of stops, the piece 8 may have recesses so that certain drills are not actuated. The piece 8 may also be between the spindles and work to allow some spindles only to pass through recesses therein. In a horizontal machine, Fig. 3, the head 15 is moved automatically by a motor 3 and stopped in each position by precision braking-means. The spindles may be driven through universal-shafts to allow adjustment on the head.
