A combined taper-measuring machine and linear-dimension gauge comprises a bed 1 fitted with headstocks 2, 3 having centres 4, 5 between which the workpiece 6 or 7 is held, a carriage 8 mounted on balls for movement along the bed 1 parallel to the axis of the centres, a slide 10 mounted for movement on the carriage at right angles to the axis of the centres, a first contact member 12 adjustably supported, together with a dial indicator 14 on a mounting carried by the slide, a second contact member 13 supported on a mounting 16 which is carried by balls 17 on the slide, 10 for movement at right angles to the axis of the centres, and a micrometer mounted at 19 on the slide 10 so that its spindle can be brought into working engagement with the mounting 21 of the second contact member 13. The bed 1 is preferably provided with a groove disposed parallel to the axis of the centres and adapted to receive length-gauge bars 23, 24, 24A for engagement with the carriage, a dial indicator 25 being associated with these bars.
