In a sliver-balling unit of a gill box, in which the balling head is stationary and the sliver is traversed axially of the ball roll 5, the sliver delivered by the draft rollers 2 of the gill box is condensed on to a freelyrotatable guide roller 3 and then travels directly to the point of tangency of the ball 5 in a substantially rectilinear path, compensation for the variation of distance between rollers 2 and roll 5 being obtained by continuous movement of roller 3 perpendicular to its axis. Between roller 3 and roll 5 the sliver passes through a false-twist trumpet 6 carried by a guide rod 9 pivoted at one end at 10 to the arbors 4 of roller 3, and at the other end at 11 to a bracket 12 which is reciprocated along a guide 13 parallel to the axis of roll 5. Thus, the axis of trumpet 6 is always maintained in line with the direction of the sliver between roller 3 and roll 5; also, as the trumpet moves towards the ends of its traverse, roller 3, which is carried on an arm pivoted at 4SP11/SP, is moved downwardly towards the position 4SP1/SP so as to keep constant the distance between rollers 2 and roll 5. Trumpet 6 is rotated via gearing 14 to 17, by engagement of a gear 18 on pivot pin 11 with a stationary rack 19.
