A device for converting uni-directional rotational movement into an oscillatory movement about a shaft 7, or conversely, comprises two members 1, 3 axially magnetized to produce rings of alternate poles, and driven by gears 4, 5, 6 in opposite directions, and an intermediate member 2 having one or, as shown, two magnetic rings, and caused to oscillate with shaft 7 by a treadle 10, and, if desired, able to reciprocate axially on the shaft 7 and key 7a. During its oscillation, the member 2 is coupled alternately with member 1 and member 3, which ever is the corresponding direction. At the same time, the part 2 may be alternately axially attracted to that rotating member whose movement is in the same momentary direction. A ratchet 9 prevents reverse rotation of the wheels. In a modification the member 2 rotates in alternate directions for a substantial part of a revolution. Specification 747,727 is referred to.
