In a water gas generator or gas producer of the dry seal, self-clinkering type, adequate cooling of the discharged ash is obtained by supplying water through a pipe 28 to an annular grate trough 22 having an outer rim 24 overhanging a second annular trough 23 attached to the outer shell 10. Excess water flows into the trough 23 from which it is discharged by a pipe 29 into the ash pocket 26. The pipe 28 may be attached to the plough 27 which diverts the ash through an opening 25 into the pocket 26. The rotary, conical grate 11 comprises superposed elements 12, disposed over a conduit 14 through which air and other gasification media, e.g. steam, are supplied for discharge between the elements 12.
