Class 72 Apparatus for the continuous conversion of pig iron to steel bysurface blowing with an oxygen-containing gas comprises a container 1 having at the top devices for the supply of molten pig iron 2, refining gas 4 and slag-forming or cooling material 8. an aperture 9 at the bottom for tapping finished steel, and a slag overflow aperture 13. The container may be elongated in elevation and round in cross-section, and the aperture 9 may be associated with a syphon 10 having an overflow 11 slightly above the level 5 of the molten bath 6. The desired weight-ratio of pig iron and refining gas may be regulated automatically by mounting their respective storage containers 14, 15 on a weighing device 16, and waste gases may escape through an opening 21 in the cover 17. The refining gas may consist of one or more of O, air CO 2 or H 2 O and 'may be supplied by a plurality of jets, one or more of which blow through the slaw layer 12 on to or into the moltenbath 6, the other jet or jets blowing onto or into the slag layer.
