In a mechanical brake system for winding engines wherein separate brake levers of two pairs of brakes are connected to the movable members 5, 5a of two double-acting pressureoperated device 4, one side of the piston 5 of the movable member being connected directly to an accumulator 14 supplied by a main pressure medium supply pipe and the other side through a control valve 8 also to the main pressure medium supply, the accumulator is so arranged as to perform the dual purpose of providing constant pressure medium supply for the normal operation of the brakes, and also the necessary braking force for the emergency operation of the two pairs of brakes in the event of failure of the pressure medium supply to both brake engines.
