A device to mark or render useless the contents of a stolen bag comprises a receptacle for marking or corrosive fluid which is discharged into the bag upon its being snatched from a person carrying it. In one embodiment the fluid is contained in a glass phial 10 in a holder 13 secured to the bag, the holder having attached thereto a hollow stem 18 in which is a spring-loaded plunger 24. The plunger is normally maintained in an upper position by a cable 30 passing through holes 27, 29 in the plunger and stem and being attached to a wrist strap 32. When the bag is snatched, the cable is pulled clear and the plunger released to shatter the phial. In another embodiment, the stem is secured to the bag but the holder is detachable. In a further embodiment, a phial held in brackets within the bag is surrounded by a ring having a part protruding to the outside and joined to the wrist strap by a cable. When the bag is snatched the ring is jerked against the phial causing it to break.
