Improvements in or relating to refractory coatings and binders for metals

Paste-like compositions for applying to or between metal parts comprise an aqueous solution containing at least 10 grams of acid phosphoric binder per 100 mls. solution and sufficient chromic acid-action inhibitor to produce maximum inhibition on metals, and sufficient powdered refractory filler, principally silica, to form a paste of desired consistency. Up to 20 per cent of the filler may be a suspension-promoting substance, e.g., titania, zirconia or clay; and/or a pigment, e.g., titania or chromium sesquioxide. Binders specified are orthophosphoric acid and mono aluminium and monomagnesium phosphate, whilst inhibitors are chromic anhydride, alkali metal chromate or dichromate.
