791,457. Automatic exchange systems. ANULF, K. A. Aug. 12, 1955 [Aug. 13, 1954], No. 23346/55. Class 40 (4). Selectors are arranged to return to a control circuit signals indicative of their proper operation and the control circuit is arranged to hold the selectors irrespective of the condition of the calling line and to operate indicating means if the signal is not received within a predetermined time. A calling subscriber establishes in known manner a connection to a register REG over a line-finder S and a register connector RFV. In the register line and hold relays R1 R2 operate in the usual way, R2 providing holding circuits for the finder switching relay S1 and the register connecting relay RFV1. The dialled digits set switches VI, V2 ... in the usual manner whereupon relay V0 operates to complete an interrupter circuit for relay R5. The latter steps the counting switch V10 and pulses relay G11 to step the first selector IGV. When the setting of switch V10 agrees with that of VI, R4 operates to interrupt the pulsing circuit for R5 and connects an impulse source to the timing switch T. Meantime the selector IGV hunts by means not shown over the relevant group and when a free outlet is found relays G14, G22 operate in series over the test wire. During the pick-up time of relay G22 negative potential reverted over the b-wire brings up R3 which releases R4 whereupon the timing device T is restored. In the event of a call being blocked owing to congestion, if the caller hangs up during the first ten seconds the whole connection is released. Otherwise after ten seconds the timing device contact T1 operates R6 which holds the register connecting relay RFV1 even though the calling subscriber subsequently hangs up. When the latter does so, however, R1 and R2 release S1 in the linefinder so that the calling subscriber is free. When eventually the congestion clears and the switch finds a free outlet and reverts the negative signal over the b-wire to operate R3, relay R4 releases, followed by T1, R6 and RFV1 and the whole connection is released. If, however, the hold-up is due to a fault, no signal is reverted and after 10 minutes contact T2 operates R7 which locks, holds R4 and raises an alarm. The action of contact T1 may be dispensed with so that holding of the switch train takes place immediately. In equipment comprising a plurality of register-controllers taken into use cyclically only a few may be equipped for fault detection as described above. The invention is also applicable to revertive impulse systems, failure to receive reverted impulses causing fault indication. The invention is further applicable to systems having a separate control circuit per stage. In this case preceding switching stages may be released when a fault occurs.
