Apparatus for despatching carriers 13 at regular intervals comprises a reciprocating block 1 which is bored transversely at 2 to receive a carrier and moves in a housing 3 from a position in which the bore registers with an inlet pipe 19 to one in which it registers with a despatching pipe 15. Carriers can accumulate in the pipe 19 but are fed singly at regular intervals to the pipe 15 which operates at a pressure different from that of the pipe 19. The block 1 has a nut 7 secured to it resiliently which is engaged by a screw-threaded spindle 6 connected to the shaft of the motor M. A chamber 10 on the underside of the housing contains contacts vk, bkl and bk2. The contact vk extends into the housing and is closed to start the motor when a carrier falls on it. This causes movement of the block to the left until an abutment 16 carried by it actuates the switch bk2 to stop the motor. In this position the carrier falls into the tube 15 and in its descent actuates a running contact fk to start the motor in the opposite direction. When the abutment reaches the contact bk1, the motor is switched off and braked and the cycle starts again when a carrier falls on to the contact vk. The contacts bk and bk2 are secured adjustably in the chamber 10. The mouth of the bore is cut away at 18 in order that a carrier 13SP1/SP resting on a carrier in the bore shall be lifted as the block moves to the left and does not impede the movement.
