The viscosity-index of mineral oil based lubricating or hydraulic oils is improved by the addition thereto of the nitrogen-containing products obtained by the alcoholysis at temperatures above 1800 DEG C. of methyl methacrylate polymers with alcohols containing at least 8 carbon atoms in the presence of ammonia and/or amines, particularly amines containing at least 4 carbon atoms. In an example (4) a lubricating oil additive is made by alcoholysing polymethyl methacrylate in mineral oil solution with a straight-chain primary alcohol of average C-number of 15.2 in the presence of cocosamine (a mixture of C10-C18 fatty amines).ALSO:Polymers of methyl methacrylate are subjected to hydrolysis and/or alcoholysis in the presence of ammonia and/or amines at temperatures above 180 DEG C., preferably from 220 DEG to 300 DEG C. In hydrolysis processes caustic potash, caustic soda, alkali metal carbonates, alkali metal acetates and lime may be used as hydrolytic agents. In alcoholysis processes alcohols containing up to 20 carbon atoms may be used, including polyhydric alcohols, e.g. diethylene glycol, which give rise to cross-linked products. Amines specified are methylamine, butylamine n - hexylamine, n - octylamine, 2 - ethylhexylamine, diisobutylamine, cocosamine, morpholine and hydrotalgamine, which is the product obtained by reductive amination of long-chain fatty acids, e.g. tallow acids. The products, which contain nitrogen, may be used, depending on their nature as soil-improving agents, textile treating agents, thickening agents, additives for lubricating or hydraulic oils and, in the case of cross-linked products, ion-exchange resins.
