Sealing means for preventing the ingress of air to the plunger space 3 of an hydraulic plunger-controlled diaphragm pump comprises at least one packing-ring surrounding the plunger and a flushing ring 6 adapted to be supplied with liquid for wetting the surface of the plunger. As shown, the ring 6 is located between packing-rings 4, 7 which are axially compressed by a gland 9 and nut 10. The ring 6 is provided with a number of circumferentiallyspaced holes 21 which communicate through one or more pipes 17 with a container 16 from which the pump control liquid is supplied to the space 3 through a suction valve 14. Instead of using the pump control liquid for flushing, liquid for this purpose may be supplied from a separate container. In operation, liquid surrounding the ring 6 removes the air from the surface of the plunger. Several rings 6 may be located along the stuffing-box if desired.
