A heat-resistant water-soluble lubricant free from oil, fat and soap comprises a mixture of a meta-, ortho-, or pyro-phosphate of an alkali metal and an inorganic salt, other than a borate of an alkali metal, which forms a entectoid melt with the alkali metal phosphate.
