A cermet comprises a continuous matrix of uranium monocarbide containing particles or an intermeshing network of uranium, and is made by pressure shaping a powdered mixture of uranium and carbon (less than 50 atom of the mixture) and sintering in an inert atmosphere at a temperature sufficient to cause reaction between uranium and carbon but below the melting point of uranium. Preferably 0,3 to 4,5% of carbon is present, and the pressure shaping done at 650 DEG -750 DEG C.
